Day 5, Airplanes and Airports

Corfu has an interesting activity,  one that we've also seen and experienced on the Caribbean island of St. Martin. It involves crazy people taking advantage of easy access very near the airplanes' approach to landing.  When we landed here on Monday, I saw these crazy people and said to myself, "I wanna do that." So today, Nick and I took a half hour bus ride out of Corfu's Old Town to do that very thing. But first, we walked across a narrow concrete dike to a little church. Why anyone would build a church in the middle of a bay is beyond me. But here it is.

And then we walked on another narrow concrete dike just a stone's throw away,  braving the wind-whipped waves to see the end of the runway. I switched out of my Birkenstocks and slipped on my water shoes. Smart move. The waves were splashing up some good sprays.

The wind was coming from the opposite direction today so the planes did not fly over us as they were landing, as we did on Monday.  Instead, they flew towards us, completing their landing as they reached the end of the runway near us. It was a little disappointing but fun nonetheless.

The runway is on the right. The little dots in the water are the landing lights.

Walking down the high hill to sea level to get to the dikes, we came upon this obstacle in the path. The tree is now dead, but it was quite large, proving that it had been there a while, and proving that the stones on the buried part had been there even longer.

These two love birds were adorable.

The forecast for severe thunderstorms today proved to be accurate. It was a little rainy off and on this morning and afternoon but this evening was fully of drama. Anticipating the storm, we went to a local market yesterday and bought some bread, cheese, tomatoes, cukes, carrots, olives, and, elsewhere, a bottle of red wine for tonight's supper. This allowed us to stay safe and dry when the heavier rains arrived early this evening. We simply had to batten down the hatches in our apartment, eat yummy local food and drink wine while watching a movie on Netflix. We also washed a load of clothes. Such a domestic scene. The rain should clear out by noon tomorrow so we can resume outdoor activities.

Day 28, Reflections on Greece

We left Crete today, ending our four weeks in Greece trip. Some thoughts off the top of my head.  Weather I think we timed our visit pretty ...
