Today's theme was beaches, which provided us with a focus on what to do and where to go. Note: Paros is roughly 13 miles long and about 10 miles wide so it's super easy to traverse the island. Well, when the roads are good, that is.
We started on the southern part of the island, in the cute little village of Aliki. I forgot to take photos of the first two beaches but they were both in Aliki. The first beach was named Aliki and the second was Pisa Aliki. I only waded at these two beaches.
The water color is spectacular everywhere.
In Aliki on the way to the beach, I saw this old, weather-beaten wooden door having to fight with an oleander tree for prominence.
After Aliki we headed east, over the mountain and were met with this view.
At Tripiti Beach, Nick took this photo. We lounged here for a long while, reading, staring at the water, listening to a cowbell. Wait. What? Is that a cowbell I hear?
Yep, we had the pleasure of a flock of sheep amble past us behind a stone fence. Only one sheep was wearing a cowbell (sheepbell?), and it seemed always to be at the rear of the flock. I couldn't get them to turn around and face me. When I asked them to, they took off at a fast walk to sulk under the tree. I felt snubbed. So I took this photo of their rears.
Our next beach was Drios located in the small town of Drios where we were yesterday. This beach wasn't quite as sandy as the others; it had more small pebbles and rocks.
But it did have another taverna for us to eat at for a late lunch. And like many other restaurants and tavernas, the cats were hanging out. Cats are everywhere, as they were in Corfu and Athens. And they seem to be well treated. They look well fed and healthy. We often see food and water left out for them. These two cats thought they were our lunch companions. They sat on the other two chairs at our four-top. We did not feed them.
Incidentally, the restaurant staff are pretty tolerant of the cats. The only time we've seen the staff react negativity towards the cats is when the cats try to get on top of the table.
While we were in Drios, we signed up for a cooking class for Thursday, 5:50-9:30 pm. Stay tuned!
We decided to hit a beach on the west side of the island so we backtracked a bit, back over the mountain, to Voutakos Beach. The sun was starting to set so the lighting is golden.
There was a guy there doing handstands, and I liked the silhouette he made. I caught it just as he was coming down.
Tomorrow we plan to take a fairly quick ferry over to Naxos, an island just to the east of Paros. We decided to bring our rental car on the ferry for convenience on Naxos even though the fare for the car ain't cheap as it was going to Antiparos.
