Day 10 Athens Fish Market & Psiri Area

Early this afternoon we hoofed it to the fish and meat market. The fish looked so fresh, and the prices made me want to move here, they were so inexpensive! One customer was buying these blue-tipped crabs, and they (the crabs, not the customer) were so feisty! They kept climbing out of the bucket. And they were a good size, too. About 10" across.

It was just a short jog over to the spice street, where a lot of shops selling herbs and spices entice you with their glorious aromas. I bought some lemon salt flakes, and I can't wait to try it when I get home.

Next we walked a longer distance, to the Psiri section of Athens, where we ate lamb chops al fresco for a late lunch/early supper. It was very peaceful and the lamb was delicious! At the table next to us was a couple from Sao Paolo, Brazil, who'd just bought a house in northeastern Greece, in Thessaloniki. We talked with them for quite a while.

I ordered a glass of red wine with my lamb, and this was how it came: in a small copper pitcher and a juice glass.

The cats of Athens are treated quite well. Lots of people feed them, and, I think in return,  they keep the rodent population under control. They are generally a little skittish but many will allow you to pet them.

It's still surprising to me that we can be walking along, minding our own business,  when bam! There's the Parthenon, all lit up.

Walk a bit more, and bam! There it is again.

This is our little alleyway, where our 5th floor apartment is. Thankfully there's an elevator and we have well-insulated windows so it's always quiet. I took this photo while standing in the doorway of our building.

Tomorrow we had thought we would take a day-trip to the nearby island of Hydra (pronounced EE drah). However when we tried to buy ferry tickets, there were no tickets available for the return from Hydra to Athens (Piraeus is the port actually). So we have a full day tomorrow to do as we like in Athens before we leave for Paros on Friday.

Day 28, Reflections on Greece

We left Crete today, ending our four weeks in Greece trip. Some thoughts off the top of my head.  Weather I think we timed our visit pretty ...
